A little extra assistance
Submitted by Amanda Nunez, Student Assistance Services, March 2024
One day a student came in and requested food, however he requested foods that only needed to be microwaved. He looked at the menu of offerings and stated he would get other items but unfortunately only had a small egg pan with no handle and a broken spatula to cook with, so he was limited. He said he wished he had a pot to cook soup because it was cold at the time but could not afford to purchase one at the time.
My volunteer heard this and after the student left, we got together and purchased him a large cooking pan, pot, and some cooking utensils. The next time he came into the office we gifted it to him; after which he then proceeded to ask if he could give us a hug. When he left that day, he left in tears supplied with home crafted recipes and food.
My job is obviously to help students but when you know you are truly making an impact it is much more meaningful.
