Activity Report, January 31- February 6, 2016
- Chicano Programs Welcome Event: On Wednesday, February 3, Chicano Programs held a Welcome Back event. The event was held to inform students about the services offered by Chicano Programs, NMSU and community offices. The NMSU student organization, Hispanic Council, also attended this event.
- Educational Extension: On Tuesday, February 2, the Immigrant Student Issues Committee of NMSU sponsored training on Higher Education Access for Undocumented and DACA students as well as U.S citizens who graduate from a foreign high school. The training was presented to approximately 80 high school counselors from the Albuquerque Public Schools (APS). Gustavo Guzmán of Admissions and Cyrena Alfaro of Financial Aid presented to the counselors via Skype, while Laura Gutiérrez Spencer of Chicano Programs was at the APS conference room. Students from the Albuquerque area DREAM Team joined the presentation. These students provided valuable information and testimony regarding the many challenges experienced by undocumented students, as well as the many achievements that are possible with further education.
- Commencement: The Commencement Office attended the Annual Conference for National Association for Commencement Officers (NAACO). The NAACO association is composed over 300 educational institutions. Marisela Marquez and Gabrielle Martinez, from the SAEM office, hosted a tabled discussion regarding the planning of a successful Doctorial Hooding Ceremony. Giving tips to those Universities that will be planning a Doctorial Hooding Ceremony.
