Building hope

On October 9, 2013, Dr. Michael Jasek will host Building Hope at 7:00 pm in the East Ballroom of the Corbett Center Student Union.

In a recent email, Dr. Jasek wrote that in his first year on campus, he became aware of the seriousness of mental health issues, specifically depression, among students. Based on national data, we know that the number of students suffering from depression is likely greater than what is brought to our attention.

Dr. Jasek wants to start a dialog on campus about depression and other mental health issues faced by some students, faculty, and staff. To begin this dialog, the Office of the Dean of Students along with the Counseling Center will host this event.

Building Hope will focus on depression. The program will look at national trends, symptoms of depression, and what to do if someone shows signs of depression. However, this program seeks to take the dialog to the next level. Building Hope will go beyond numbers, symptoms, and response. Building Hope will put a face on depression. It will not talk of depression as a “them” but rather as “us” or “me.”

The projected outcome of Building Hope is to give participants the hope and realization that those who suffer from depression are not alone; there are others who suffer and there are those who care. The goal is to create a dialog around the issue of depression and mental health.
